How do I feed my baby?

Bottles, pacifiers, nipples. Feeding can be very daunting to a new parent especially with the thousands of options out there. When starting to bottle feed we look at multiple factors in choosing the best bottle, but also the biggest aspect to consider is the nipple itself.

Flow rates and nipple shapes can determine the overall quality of your baby’s meal time. Having the right nipple can help increase satiety, reduce gas, and reduce exhaustion during feedings for both the caregiver and the baby!

How do we know when a nipple change is in order? How do we know if the nipple we are using isn’t right for our baby? Typical signs include:

  • Hard sound swallowing

  • Choking

  • Gulping and frequent coughing

  • Longer feeding times

  • Excess spillage from the mouth

  • Falling asleep at the beginning of a feed

Your baby will always indicate when he/she is uncomfortable. These are also signs that your baby is swallowing air during feeds which can lead to GI discomfort and eventually a shortage of nutritional servings.
